Chapter 16

Vanessa

I could hardly believe I’d agreed to this. A vacation, with Zorak of all people! And not just any vacation – an adventure getaway to Xetor 5, known for its extreme sports and breathtaking natural wonders. I must have been out of my mind.

Yet there I was, packing my suitcase as Zoe flitted around my bedroom, helping me choose what to bring.

“You’ll need your swimsuit, of course,” she said, holding up my modest blue one-piece. “But how about this little number too, just in case?”

Zoe grinned and tossed a tiny red bikini onto the bed. I felt myself blushing. Did she really think I’d need that on a trip with Zorak? He and I had been cautiously circling around something more than friendship, but we were far from the point of skimpy lingerie!

Still, I packed it, along with shorts, tank tops, and a few sundresses for the warm climate. Zoe insisted I include heels and a little black dress too. “For dinners out!” she argued. I relented, knowing one dress wouldn’t take up much room.

The day of the trip, I was a bundle of nerves as the transport ship lifted off. Zorak seemed perfectly at ease, excitedly telling me about the cliff diving, moonlight hikes, and more adventurous activities he had planned. My stomach swooped. I’d always played it safe, but Zorak was pushing me outside my comfort zone. Strangely, instead of my usual anxiety, I felt a thrill of anticipation.

After checking into our plush resort, Zorak immediately wanted to go cliff diving. The cliffs were staggering - 350 feet high overlooking an emerald lagoon. Zorak didn’t hesitate, executed a perfect swan dive into the crystal waters below. I stared in awe, my heart hammering. No way could I do this!

Sensing my fear, Zorak patiently talked me through it, promising to jump with me. I took a deep breath and we leapt, my scream mingling with his exuberant shout. The free fall was terrifying and euphoric. We hit the water safely. Adrenaline pumping, I wanted to go again.

The next day, we hiked up a mountain to watch the twin suns set. The violet sky was unlike anything I’d seen on my urban home planet. Reaching the peak left me breathless but accomplished. Zorak’s hand brushed mine and I didn’t pull away.

I was having so much fun with Zorak that I made an impulsive decision - I handed off the legal brief I had brought to work on to a colleague back home. No need to interrupt this adventure with dry paperwork. Zorak suggested dinner that evening to celebrate my time off.

I chose the little black dress for the occasion, hoping it might catch his eye. Zorak looked sharp in a sports coat. We took a shuttle into town and I was surprised when we met another man around Zorak’s age at the restaurant entrance.

“Vanessa, meet my friend Jax. He lives here year round as an extreme sports coach. I thought it would be nice for you two to meet.”

My stomach sank slightly that we wouldn’t be dining alone, but Jax seemed friendly enough.
